In order to become a Personal Licence Holder (PLH) there is a legal requirement to undertake training under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. The Personal Licence Holder completes the required test online and following successful completion, is issued with a certificate by Pearson. This is then submitted to the local licensing board and as long as certain criteria are met, a personal licence is issued.
The SCPLH is an official qualification therefore certain guidelines need to be followed and must be complied with.

No.1
Firstly, you need to have an employer to sit the test at your venue. This is due to the fact this is an official qualification and you will be taking the test under exam conditions with your manager acting as the invigilator.
alt
No.2
The minimum amount of time you need to spend learning and revising is 6 hours and the content material is in your Bookstand. You can only apply to do the test once you have completed the necessary questions in your Workbook.
alt
IMPORTANT
The laptop/computer must have a camera as the built-in test feature takes screenshots of the candidate to ensure they aren’t getting help from their manager
alt
No.3
The SCPLH comprises of 40 multiple choice questions and the test will be taken on a laptop or computer at your venue. This is to conform to the Pearson guidelines suggesting that the candidate was not helped in any way. If there is any proof that the test was carried out by anyone else other than the candidate, the certificate will be withdrawn and there could be consequences.
alt
No.4
As stated, you must have a manager present throughout the duration of the test. They will act as an invigilator to ensure you are sitting the test under exam conditions. In the Bookstand, there is an invigilator’s handbook that will need to be read and signed by your manager beforehand to say that they understand the procedures of invigilating the test.
alt
No.5
Your venue needs to have a suitable area where you can sit the test and this should be quiet and free from distractions. This can’t be in the corner of your venue during opening hours or anywhere where there could be disturbances. Your venue is basically a test centre and you have the benefit of taking the SCPLH there which is why you must follow these rules.
alt
No.6
Necessary signs must be displayed in your venue to indicate there is a test being carried out. These will be sent to your manager and will need to be printed and displayed on the walls at your venue.
Random spot checks are carried out by Pearson to ensure that tests are being carried out in appropriate exam conditions. They do not announce when they are doing these checks so please ensure that you are following the guidelines to avoid being penalised.
Good luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch by calling 0333-4141947 or emailing help@theslta.co.uk.
